# Marathon Day

Today was the first ever marathon race in Avignon, France. No, we didn't run in it, but we did watch a good bit, as an early part of the route passed within a block of our Airbnb, and we (along with many others) followed the route across the Rhône River for most of the morning. 

In Paris last week, we noticed runners seemingly everywhere. In fact, running has surged in popularity in France, making it one of Europe's leaders in race participation and shaking jogging's reputation as an eccentric hobby in Paris. 

Inspiring, but with a history of tendonitis in my knees, arthritis in my lower back, and a chronically sore hip, I'll have to stick to walking and climbing stairs. 

By the numbers:

7.9 miles we walked today

26.2 miles in a marathon race

84 degrees Fahrenheit, the high temp for the day (approx. 10 degrees above average for late September)

4,000+ runners participated in the marathon and half-marathon
